I ran across this author as part of the Best Short Stories of the Century anthology and recommend him as a This book was written during WW2 and there are plenty of Rockwell-esque moments here–boys running around a small town with colorfully-nicknnamed chums, creaky old guy running the local telegraph station, women with big hair attending their monthly social gathering. This book starts slow and remains slow, and seems a superficially simple book.

The Human Comedy was like wrapping myself in a warm blanket of memories, memories that are mine, even though they aren’t. I was engaged umsna and through and my jaw literally dropped in the end because of the twist.

Good story, realistic characters, real feelings and not something that would come out of a corny drama script, very cute talking kid named Ullysses, good brother named Homer, parents are not very shown. Characters are not fleshed out save, perhaps, Homer Macauleyand nothing much actually happens in the book. The sentences are short and crisp.
There wasn’t as much charm to it now as it probably once had. It has been translated into many languages.

Her performance is terrific. If it is due to the early loss of his father, his need to work and the absence of his older bother, not spoilingthen that was not enough for me. Saroyan was originally writing a movie script with the commediz, The Human Comedy, and based on Saroyan’s youth in Fresno, but he had a disagreement with the studio and although they went on lz produce a movie, he took the title and the idea and created this book, intended to lighten hearts during World War II.
Trivia About The Human Comedy. The book is set at Ithaca, California and starts out with Ullysses, the cute kid, talking to a hobo. I would think that it would be appreciated by someone from that generation much more.
