Before we take up a detailed consideration of the meaning of the Gayatrl mantra it is necessary 60 gayatr! Gayatri: The Daily Religious Practice of the Hindus

This mighty centre of physical energy is pouring out continuously all kinds of vibrations and energies into the solar system and the heat, light and other kinds of energies are utilized for maintaining life in all its forms on our planet. But study of the mere theoretical aspects of a subject like Gayatri, even though it is deep and detailed, is more or less futile although many students allow themselves to remain contented with such a study.


But before we can grasp the full signifieance of this part of the mantra it is necessary to understand what the different words constituting it really mean. It may or may not 64 gayatr! As pointed out before, the forms assigned to the various Divinities or gods and goddesses in the Hindu religion are all symbolic in character, each part or feature of the form representing some power, attribute or function. The technique of upasana has come down to us after passing through the hands of teachers and sadhakas of different grades and abilities during the course of thousands of years and naturally it has been added to and modified in different ways.

This is particularly true of forms which are natural and are produced according to a pattern by forces of Nature working behind them such as a tree, a human body or a solar system.

What do these names indicate? We saw in Chapter IV that the three Mahd Vydhritis are the hija mantras of the Presiding Deities of the three lowest planes prithvi, anlarikslia and svxrga and the metre of the most important of them, namely the physical is again gayatri.

It is necessary because no one who has not already very strong samskaras brought over from past lives can acquire suddenly the strength and the capacity for the total effort required in the pursuit of the spiritual ideal.


Since there are fifty-two letters in the Sanskrit alphabet and these letters can be arranged in all kinds of ways it should be possible to produce almost MANTRA YOGA 47 an infinite variety of effects through the help of mantras.

The greater the predominance of the sattvic material the more effectively can the vehicle serve as an instrument of the higher consciousness. Light may be physical, mental or spiritual. It is in the sounds produced by the letters that the subtle specific powers reside and not in the symbols used for them. It will be seen therefore that the three clearly defined and separate parts of the Gayatrl mantra have each a definite function and purpose and the verbal or mental repetition of the mantra in japa should be accompanied, as far as possible, by the corresponding attitudes in consciousness.

But many people perform japa in a rather mechanical fashion without understanding its theory or technique The consequence is that the results which they are able to achieve are of a rather superficial and limited nature.

In the first place, they point out that the physical Sun which we see and which alone Science has studied is merely an outer cover of a glorious Reality which pervades and energizes the whole solar system. Thanks for telling us about the problem.

The three books are, therefore, in a sense, complementary in character and throw light on different aspects of the sadhana or way which leads to Self- realization. This happens generally when any spiritual tradition passes into the hands of mere priests who are interested in keeping their hold on the followers and being considered as the sole custodians of Divine Wisdom. The higher and more spiritual the object gwyatri a mantra the simpler the technique and the less the danger in using it intelligently- It is 34 gayatr!

Anyway, since we are dealing with the subject of Mantra Yoga, especially in relation to japa of Gayatri, we need not go into these matters here. We do not need the gaaytri of a person and the machinery of the post-office for sending a thought. In this last part the sadhaka surrenders himself completely to the Divine and thus makes it possible for the Divine forces to flow into his vehicles, so as to purify those vehicles and to raise them to a higher degree of sensitivity and capacity for enlightenment.

When the lower vehicles are dropped even the latter kind of limitations disappear and Videhamukti is attained. In the third stage the whole idea underlying the mantra takes the place of the meanings of the separate words. Indrajeeth marked it as to-read Sep 11,
