The Book of Atrus (Myst, #1) by Rand Miller
I love the world of Myst and so was determined to get through the book. It gives us the back story of Atrus, beginning with his birth and early years being raised by his grandmother, Anna. The cover looks like an old tome, the pages have a weathered look, and every so many pages we’re shown a drawing Atrus made of his surroundings and inventions. Once in the great city all Atrus knows is replaced with the lost culture. For those who atruz not played the Myst games these stories probably would not hold much interest as stand alone stories. Scenery descriptions to die for. As with the other books in the series the point of view changes can be confusing at points, but overall it is an flawless crafted series. This book leaves a lot more mystery to the reader in the end and left us looking forward to the follow up text, “The Book of Ti’ana.

The Book of Atrus
Anna is my hero. The book really on ever involved two characters at one time which I think contributed to the slowness: The revelations about the beginning of the relationship between Atrus and Gehn were so human and moving. Most of Gehn’s worlds are unstable and if a world has inhabitants Gehn insists on be treated as a God. It is has the same mistake as the Mass Effect 3 ending; for no apparent reason with no hints the universe is suddenly expanded with an extra plot attus that doesn’t make sense.
Definitely my favourite of the three, it’s the story of Atrus’s childhood, So here’s a fun story: If you’ve never played the games, you’ll probably feel very under-whelmed. The books in the game have a very old styled feel, which they should since they’re all handmade books, but the makers wanted to keep that atmosphere alive with printing these books.
