As usual with Jim Packer, this is packed with detail about the lives the Puritans lead. Perhaps its greatest effect on me was to encourage the discovery of some of the more readable authors – Richard Baxter in particular. At its heart, this was a spiritual movement, passionately concerned with God and godliness, and a movement for church reform, pastoral renewal and evangelism, and spiritual revival.

And oh how important they are for us today.

This book is a fof yet thorough treatment of Puritan beliefs, practices and life. Application The Puritans were in a unique stage of history where they were blessed with a wealth of understanding into the Scriptures.

The book is well written, and thick with insights. Since then, much ground has been regained in Puritan studies, and we now have a host of resources to which we can turn for insight into what the Puritans were really like.
